I agree, that sometimes it is very hard to work along and not to communicate with other people, as for me the best way out is to have a walk, I think fresh air is the best rest for my brain.

Being an e-comm dude by day, this happens to me *every* year. For two months, my life goes into this strange, manic state. I lock myself up with my computer. I eat like a fiend. I sleep very little…

And then, I emerge into the harsh light of January.

The first few years I tried to explain it to people but then I just gave up. It’s not something you explain.

This year was different though. I got involved in NaNoWriMo and that kept me tied into a social world that wasn’t quite so dependent on me being somewhere at a certain time. It worked on my schedule, and I didn’t need to make excuses. It wasn’t perfect mind you, but it was a nice change.

Good to have you back, Bob!

@Office Newb – I work with my wife, actually, and I do get some “office” interaction when we’re working. Still, I’m thinking more of the “peer” problem – others who do what I do. Plus, I live in a pretty rural area. Finding other freelance writers interested in sharing office space would be next to impossible.

@Rhodester – Heh heh, yeah, yeah. I know. I’m a slug! We need to catch up, and soon.

@Bamboo – you’re right about the outside social structure, for certain. Here again, those peer connections are something you typically can’t get outside of a work context.

Great post! I love to be alone, but I can only last a week. I too have a family so they keep me from going crazy. I also keep myself from going crazy chatting with peers; they know when it is ok to talk. But I do love to be on my own. Have you ever considered a co-working situation? Co-working involves renting shared office space with other freelance and teleworkers.

You’d get the camaraderie of an office but the flexibility to do your work, your way, on your time.
