When I was a nurse, it was like a conversation killer: "So, you empty bed pans and push pills and chart about crazy people all day,huh? Must be exhausting." Freelancing helps me connect to people. With every client assignment I am given an opportunity to give birth to their vision. I also have the chance to use that gift to help worthwhile people and causes. As you said not every project is world changing but I am always conscious of making a difference in a small way with every encounter I am blessed to have.
