One of the most amazing things about being a freelance writer is that I don’t have to do any work I don’t want to do. If I’m not comfortable with the subject matter, I don’t have to take the gig. I can pick and choose my work based on my own moral code and comfort level. Unlike my former life as a cubicle dweller, I’ll never have to make a choice between conscience and my boss’ demands.
On top of that, though, the work I do can make a difference in my world. Sure, not every gig is world changing. But some are. And what I do right here is, too. The fact that my work can have a purpose beyond just earning a paycheck is one of the things that sustains me on a daily basis.
I have a guest post today over at Freelance folder calledFreelancers: 3 Principles That Can Change Your World. Go give it a look, and let me know what you think over there, and let me know how you use your career as a freelancer to change your world.

Bob, CONGRATULATIONS! On being named one of the Top 10 Blogs for Writers – yes! This is a great post. One of the wonderful things about being a writer is that it has aligned my purpose and passion. With every client assignment I am given an opportunity to give birth to their vision. I also have the chance to use that gift to help worthwhile people and causes. As you said not every project is world changing but I am always conscious of making a difference in a small way with every encounter I am blessed to have.

the music I write about is thoughtful, thought provoking, soulful, spirtiual, sometimes funny, sometimes sorrowful, always engaging and inspring, and most of it not widely known. I change the world by giving context to this music, helping people find it, and helping the musicians who make this sort of music find their listeners.

When I met new people and they ask what I do, they are nearly always intrigued when I tell them I am a freelance writer. When I was a nurse, it was like a conversation killer: “So, you empty bed pans and push pills and chart about crazy people all day, huh? Must be exhausting.”
Freelancing helps me connect to people.
