I was actually accused of accidental plagiarism in college. I wrote a paper completely on my own, but the topic was pretty general. My professor apparently searched some sentences on the net that were as basic as you can get and he accused me of it. Took some time, but I finally was able to prove I did it on my own. I agree, that it is really very annoying, when somebody steal your thoughts or ideas, so I think today it is great problem of all internet, so something must be done.

This is a great explanation of plagiarism. I think a lot of writers who are just starting out assume that if something is on the web, then it’s fair game for anyone to use. I’ve had to explain to several people who’ve “poached” my articles that I still hold the copyright even if the material is on a public site.
