Some writers - especially some fiction authors - tend to use big words (or obscure words) in such a way that it just comes across as flashy. It feels like they&#039;re trying to impress you with their big vocabulary. It just comes across as, well, a bit childish.

A great example of this is Christopher Paolini. His first novel, Eragon, had an overabundance of big words and flowery language. The story was good, but I found this part of it distracting.

By the time he hit the third novel (Brisinger) he reduced the amount of flashy words he used and managed to make the ones he did use fit in much more smoothly within the text. 

To me, this showed maturity as a writer and a new level of self-confidence.
