The Power of RE:

Sometimes, you have to change plans.

Sometimes, you have to change plans midstream.

Sometimes, you just have to delay a new series briefly so that you can talk about something you’re excited about.  My series on How to Write the Best Damn Food Blog Ever, as promised, will commence tomorrow.  And, I trust it will have been worth the wait.

Today, I wanted to take a moment and share something amazingly simple yet deeply profound that I discovered last week.

You see, Ritu over at GhostBlogging.net asked  me a couple of weeks ago if I’d review his new blog.  I’ve always enjoyed his posts at Freelance Folder, and, always being willing to help a fellow writer, I told him I would.  I then found myself subsequently knee-deep in an important project, causing a significant delay in the review.  I put it off, for several days in order to finish up my paying gig.  Finally, late last week I decided to go take a look at the blog, get a feel for things.

I was immediately hooked.

As you know, I don’t claim to know Jack about graphic design.  I know what I like in terms of blog layout, but I’m not a genius there either.  All I can really review, then, would be the writing and general utility of the site.  Now, there are all of 5 posts at GhostBlogging, which means that there isn’t too much to review just yet.  Still, I think it was worth the look.

I have to say that I’m thoroughly impressed with Ritu’s writing.  His article on How to Get Yourself Known in the Blogosphere was simple yet profound.  I especially like his thoughts on email with other bloggers:

Once you receive an email back from the blogger, it is of utmost importance to save this email. The reason is simple. When you write an email again, it’s very likely you will stand out from the crowd just because your emails subject line has the letters ” RE:”. The letters “RE:” has a lot of value when it comes to standing out from others. Just think, if you get an email with a subject line that has the letters “ RE:”, you know you have replied to that email and have exchanged emails with the person before. This is exactly why you need to save the first email that you received from the blogger, so you can use it as a “bait” to get the blogger’s attention and eventually a reply.

I referred to this as ”The Power of RE:” in the comments to the post, and I consider it some of the best advice I’ve read in recent days.

In addition to insightful content, GhostBlogging.net features a blogging job board.  While it’s fairly sparsely populated thus far, I have a feeling it won’t be long until it grows significantly.

So, as you have time, give GhostBlogging.net a look.  I trust you won’t be disappointed.

    Hi Bob,

I hope that you are feeling better, I had that plague too and it was killer.

I ran across Ritu’s site a few days ago, and I think he’s on to something big. I plan to be part of it.

Anyway, to what you wrote - yes, the power of RE: - that’s why I never throw away any email. It can come in handy, someday.

Nice tip. I notice some spammers have adopted that method also, but it does always make me stop when rooting through incoming emails if I see the RE:

Welcome back Bob! I hope you’re feeling better. I discovered Ghostblogging this weekend and added it to my feeds. It’s nice to have you back and I’m looking forward to the series tomorrow. I’ve been cutting calories in anticipation. :)

@ Brett (and all) - Thank you for your well-wishes. That was the first time in at least five years I’ve had such a nasty flu bug. Anyways, I agree, Ritu’s got something good going, I think.

@ Steve - that’s true. For me, the good news is that the subject is always something so generic that I know it wasn’t me that wrote it. Plus, when it says “RE: Your prescription for V I A G R R A,” that’s always a good sign, too :)

@ Evan - Welcome, welcome! Glad to have you here!

@ Ritu - You’re welcome. Stop in and visit anytime.

@ Karen - Hiya, and Thank you. Good point about calories; it’s hard to read food blogs without wanting to go out and make a bunch of the recipes. Especially if they have chocolate!
